Defektes Ladegerät? Und welcher Ersatz?

Hallo,

Danke vielmals! :D

Hi,

My battery charger in the JC is doing strange things. Sometimes, when connected to 230V the battery charger does not start the charge, and the central control panel will show 12 volts not 14.4 volts. If I remove the 230v and reconnect it will start charging. Occassionally, while charging the house battery from 230v, it will then stop charging randomly. This happened last weekend while camping, and I only knew there was a problem while showering and the inverter low voltage alarm sounded. When I checked the central control panel, it showed 11.2 volts (very low), although the 230v was connected (I could use the microwave etc from 230v without problems). Now at home the battery shows 14.4v on 230v. But now I don't trust the charger to leave me without power while camping.

Is this expected behaviour from a failing Westfalia Philips battery charger? I am happy to change it for a new one if needed.

My batteries are AGM, not Gel, so the existing charger is not the correct charging voltage, and so I think that I need to choose a new charger that is capable of charging AGM. I have seen a few possible chargers, including the Fraron replacement (20 ampere). I have also seen the Victron Energy Smart charger which has Bluetooth connection and 30 ampere output (3 outputs).

If I use a Victron, what would I be missing? There are 3 outputs, so one for the start battery and one for the house battery, and a spare output. I may decide to use LiFePO4 lithium batteries in the future, and this charger will support lithium, where the Fraron one is AGM and Gel only.

Has anyone used the Victron in the JC? https://www.victronenergy.com/chargers/ ... ger#manual

Many thanks!

OK, I unplugged the charger, and this is what I found. The plug appears to be totally burned on the Battery minus connection!!! I have no idea why this has happened but i think it is fairly recent. The central control unit shows 12.6V and charging, but the voltage is not increasing above 12.6-12.7 volts.

Has anyone else has this problem? Before I order a new charger (Fraron.de), I want to be sure that this is not a wider problem.

Moin Fleep!
Stefan

Hi Fleep!
I had the same problem in 2012. First, I provisionally with on-board resources again made a connection. A new plug, which I got free from Westfalia at that time, has since solved the problem apparently longer term. The ground pole is the plug with the strongest current flow to the charger. If there is some resistance, e.g. Due to bad connection or aging, it gets hot, as you can see on the charred plastic.
Best regards,
Stefan
