you are the payer; it is difficult for us to be at your place...
I bought 2 years ago (Sept 2016) NCV3 year 2007 120.000 km 318 automatic at 50.000€ VAT incl. General condition was good or very good.
some remarks of Fleep were pertinent:

- plastic box under the seat was a little bit broken -> i repared with glue and black plastic, no costs
- the gas spring of the lower bed was lazy -> I replaced the gas spring very easy to do, not too expensive check post about it
- the vertical light near the door of the bathroom did not work -> I replace per 1 meter of Leds, 5 € but 2 hours of labor.
- the panoramic sunroof was unsealed;-> I replaced it check post about it, 1800€ 2 hours of labor

I'm engineer and I'm not afraid to repare all by myself
I have the feeling, the most important to check is the fridge. (Heater, water pump, wc, battery charger,... are easy to find as spare parts in a non Westfalia shop.

And last but not least, If you have a plan to use the van by less than 5 grade, you have to upgrade the heater. I add an airtronic 4kW (1500€) and I'm very happy with the upgrade.

Do you have seen this one : https://suchen.mobile.de/fahrzeuge/deta ... 2afdbe740d

PS I have a french user manual in pdf (it could be easier than german); do you want it, send mp.
Agreed, the biggest part that is potential risk is the fridge. If that ever fails totally, I think it would be a big problem due to the unque shape. If you are comfortable taking the van to pieces, most other parts are available off the shelf (such as Eberspacher, Comet, Smev etc).

The sunroof seems to be made by Webasto (Hollandia model), and mine has glass with Renault markings, so I guess it was fitted in other production models. If the roof doesn't close properly (stopping frequently) check that nothing is in the sunroof tracks as the roof thinks that fingers are trapped and stops as a safety measure. In my case, it was a small piece of tree bark that dropped into the tracks and gave me a small panic.

That van for €35,000 seems very cheap. Check the floor as it has coverings that could be hiding damage.

A question about the fridge ...

If it does not work properly why don't replace just the compressor? It could be easy to find the same or a similar model ...

That assumes that it is the compressor. If so, that's should be easy enough. If it is the control circuits, that is more of a challenge.

Ok. In this case you can try to repair it replacing bad components or circuits. But I understand that could be no easy.

Don't be to worried about the fridge. That's no rocket science and the inner parts should all be replaceable. A more or less simple fridge lasts for several decades. Why should we expect less than that from our camping fridge?

I don't agree your point of view.
The fridge is a well known technology with only a compressor, an evaporateur, a condenseur and the capillary. All is common.
But you do not have any valve to fill or to drain the fluid (as you have on your car or on airco unit. It means the only solution in case of breakdown is to solder new components. And the challenge is to find somone who does that at reasonnable price.

I never met someone who does that on domestic fridge; you replace the fridge it is cheaper. But replacing the fridge of our JC is impossible; they are no more.

You would have to look outside of the common household market. In the yacht sector or commercial cooling, where custom build fridges can be found, there will be somebody found who does things like that.

AF
No, it would be an additional heater, usually installed under the passenger seat. This heater is an air heater with a fan, and takes diesel fuel from the tank. You install a control unit that typically installs by the step control on the B pillar. The heating then works in a very similar way to the VW California or Marco Polo vans. Because it is a newer unit, you can get remote controls and timers if you like. I think the remote works up to 500m away.

The factory heater uses coolant which is heated and run through mini fanned radiators in the bathroom and van. You can pay to have this upgraded by some Westfalia installers, but the Airtronic or Webasto equivilent is actually more cost effective and much more powerful. 4KW in a JC is quite warm, and you can run the factory Hydronic if you are feeling really cold. However, your waste water tank will freeze below -10 degrees, so that could be the limit without adding more insulation or heaters for the waste tank.

so explain Fleep, it is an additionnal heater.

- at -5°, the airtronic needs 15 minutes to heat 22° inside; the original Hydronic never arrives at this level
- the Airtronic used well more less current than Hydronic; in the winter with low sun radiation and bad solar cell energy production, it is an important factor. (I enjoy wildcamping )

Thank you very much to everybody. Unfortunately JC I saw two days ago was in so bad conditions that I didn't purchase it. I am still looking for a JC. I hope to be luckier (Is it correct?) next time.
