Rear Camera System
A. Camera
If the camera is small, it can be mounted on the fiberglass top third brake light. The wiring then goes through the same hole as the third brake light.
If the camera is larger, then the camera bracket is screwed (or 3M VHB double sided taped) to the fiberglass top just below the third brake light. Depending on the bracket, a through hole for the cable is drilled through the fiberglass top (behind the bracket or to the side of the bracket). The cable would go through a grommet in the hole to seal any water out.
B. Camera Cable Routing
Once the cable is inserted through the fiberglass top from the outside, it should dangle inside the Sprinter and be fishable from inside. No cabinets or walls need to be removed. The fiberglass top in the rear above the rear door is one layer and does not have an interior roof liner. The back Westfalia panel wall does not reach the top of the fiberglass roof so the cable can rest on top that wall or be clipped.
The cable runs along the top of the Westfalia back panel wall, then drops down vertically to the driver side taillight (USA).
If there is no hole in the floor below the taillight, make one and use a grommet.
The cable is then run through the Sprinter body floor, then tied to othee wiring/cables under the van, all the way to the engine compartment.
In the engine compartment, there is a hole through the bulkhead where the gas and brake pedals are. The cable runs through the engjne compartment bulkhead into the area below the dashboard.
C. Distribution Box
The distribution box can be mounted somewhere under the dashboard (screwed or glued to the bulkhead near the hood release or the underside of the dashboard).
The camera cable goes into the distribution box.
D. Power
Power for the distribution box can come fromi the fusebox under the steering wheel. You can use a piggyback add a circuit fuse to replace one of the existing fuses (forgot which fuse) to power the distribution box.
E. Monitor
The monitor can sit on the dashboard or be mounted where the rear view mirror should normally be (top of windshield between the visors).
The monitor cable is run from the distribution box, then upwards between the front door.and dashboard, then between dashboard and A pillar, then to monitor.
F. Auto On When in Reverse
Many rear view monitor (and camera) will turn on when the transmission is placed in reverse. As the installer could not figure out which wire to use, they a wire from the rear taillight reverse back up light to the distribution box (tied to the camera cable).
As I always turn the monitor on and leave on when driving, this step could be skipped.
