Heater Espar D4S problem
Hi,
We are having problems with our Espar (Eberspächer) D4S. It has been working great the last three years but now won’t longer start when operated from the Westfalia control panel. It just runs the fan simultaneously at high/low speed every 3-5 seconds. No fault codes on the control panel.
If we start it remotely via sms it runs great but only at a fixed power (medium high) and fixed fan speed. The thermostat has no function when running like this (as it only runs directly via a relay).
We really don’t find a fault. Could it be the main ECU in the heater that is malfunctioning or something else?
It’s so strange that it runs great with a simple remote start.
We also had it running normally via the control panel for three days before this happened.
Any repair suggestions are very much appreciated!

I’m still having problems with the espar. First start of the day from the central panel and it runs great until it reaches the programmed temperature (normally 20 degrees Celsius). Then it calms down and finally stops. Sadly it never starts again although the temperature inside drops completely.
If we turn of the heater and wait for > 10 minutes and then try to restart it only runs the fan every 5 seconds or so. Very strange acting. The next day it works the same, runs until the desired heat and then turns of.
I’m suspecting that the thermostat might be acting strange so I’m looking for it as a spare part but can’t find where to buy it. Does anybody know where I might buy it?

ein Forumskollege hat den Sensor mal mit folgendem Widerstand ersetzt:
10 kOhm
In Deutschland bei Conrad zu bekommen.
Bezeichnung: TS-NTC-103 A
Bestellnummer: 502 361-62

Hi Jan, langsam rantasten. Tippe auch auf den Widerstand im Thermostat.Die Heizung mal komplett stromlos machen für ein paar Stunden kann auch nicht schaden. Gruß Jürgen

Thank you! I’ll continue the work in a couple of days, have just operated my inguinal hernia and have to take it easy. Right now it hurts so much I’m just lying down in our sofa, eating strong painkillers!

Hi, I have finally managed to remove the current thermostat despite my pain. It is quite smaller than the one from Conrad. I hope it will fit inside the holder but first I’ll try how the heater works with the new thermostat just hanging loose.

Alternative replacement resistor - I have searched for a resistor that looks exactly as the original and have possibly found it.
What do you think about that one, would it work? It is easier for me to buy here in Sweden and costs only about 2.27€.

In Deiner 1. PDF wird doch genau dieser NTC im Datenblatt bezeichnet.
Ich würde das versuchen, kann ja eigentlich nix schiefgehen.
Den alten Widerstand vorsichtig auslöten und NICHT gleich wegwerfen.

The NTC arrived yesterday and I installed it temporarily and checked the values. Everything looked great so today I tried the heater. It started perfectly and ran at boost for a couple of hours (we have -5 degrees Celsius here). It probably reached the setting at 20 degrees and then shut down. No restart when the temperature inside started to drop again
No fault codes at all. This is so strange, it starts and runs perfectly and when desired temperature is reached just stops and doesn’t start again!
Might need a new ECU. When the temperature outside gets better (warmer) I’ll remove the heater and check/clean all connections. If they seem good then I’ll probably order a new ECU.

Now I have cleaned the wiring to the heater and also checked the fan. All looked good and the fan turned very easy so I tried to start it again. Nothing happened, totally quiet but after a while there was a fault code on the Westfalia display: F09
What does this fault code stand for? My documents only have between F10 and F99.
Is it possible to try a start of the heater if it is removed?
