what needs 230V?
what needs 230V?
I am "talking" to some North American people about how best to make my JC work with 120v shore power and I need to understand something
Except for the 12V battery charger (which is labelled 230V and so would have to be swapped out, which I would rather not do) is there anything else in the cabin of a JC that requires 230V?
If I understand correctly most things run off the 12V aux batteries. so if I keep them charged, everything should work. Yes?
the fridge, the interior lights..... what else?
this JC already has 12V cigarette lighter and USB sockets that work..
The two (I have only found two so far) domestic sockets would deliver 230V when on shore power but I think I can work around that.
Is there anything else that requires 230V when on shore power?
cabin heater? (no), hot water heater? (no)
the "plan" at this point is to use a Step Up transformer to deliver 230V to the exterior Commando plug.
and then a Step Down transformer to convert the domestic outlets to 120V

Re: what needs 230V?
Hello pjstock,
there is nothing in your Cook that requires 230V or 120V. Only the battery charger requires shore power. You should replace this charger (230V) with one for American 120V.
Greetings
George

Re: what needs 230V?
replacing the charger is an option
However it has been pointed out to me that if I try to use 120V shore power (to a 120V charger) the amperage is higher and the original wire gauge may not be sufficient for the increased Amperage.
should that be a concern?
I am still thinking that simply using a Step Up transformer to convert 120V to 240V before it hits the Input on the side of the van might be an easier solution.

Re: what needs 230V?
Meine Meinung ...

Re: what needs 230V?
I'm shure you can swap charger to 110V
Open the case and look for jumpers 110/230V

Re: what needs 230V?
I think you are complicating things for yourself.
By the description on the cover, looks like the Fraron charger is made to be used in Japan, North America and EU.
The benefit of buying it is also that you can switch painlessly to the new types of LifePo batteries with it, old charger does not support them.
If you have doubts, shoot an email to Fraron, I am sure they will put your mind at ease.
You also have breakers set up in the system that should prevent any issues.
There is hundreds if not thousands imported from Japan and Europe Westfalias in North America and I highly doubt that any of them have different than factory wiring.

Re: what needs 230V?
No I won't have any 230v devices to connect to the outlets.
but every electrician I have spoken to is concerned about the wire gauge if switching from 230 to 115
I'll speak to Fraron.
Re: what needs 230V?
Leistung = Spannung x Strom.
