why these black covers

I was proudly showing off my JC on my street today .
(these are unknown here in Canada)
and the most common question I got was "what are these black screens for?" and people wanted to lift them up thinking they hid something.

what do you think was the thinking behind these black covers?
was it just a "look" back 20 years ago?
