where does the exhaust normally end /exit

there truly is. never a dull moment with a James Cook.

last night, just 15kms from home , our exhaust system fell off.

we heard a loud Bang! and then a.much noisier engine.

fortunately we turned around quickly and found it lying at the side of the road.

miraculously it seems intact (and didn't destroy the underside of the van) - the hangers are still in place, as is the clamp.

question though - while it.seems complete (the end of the pipe has a downward curve like most exhausts) it also seems short.
as is it would end just rest of the middle of the van, ahead of the rear wheels.
in the attached photo it is positioned where it would sit.once reinstalled.

is that the normal position for the end of the exhaust system?

I would have expected it to e cut out the rear end like most cars. (the other photo is of our Honda's exhaust)

also.attached is a diagram of the exhaust system of a 2006 Ram Sprinter which may or may not be the same as a T1N

to note too we have been smelling exhaust in the cabin

I got it all reattached.
that clamp. must have been loose so it wiggled backwards and detached

but still, the exhaust spout is in the middle of the underside.

is that correct?

On my JC the exhausting pipe.ends at the back of the vehicle.
I think that is the only right solution.

Die Position der Auspuffmündung würde ich auf jeden Fall ändern. Heiße Abgase gehören nicht unter den Unterboden.
Wenn es kein passendes Endrohr geben sollte, würde ich ein Endrohr aus Universalteilen bauen, was an der hinteren Karosserieecke endet. So ist das auch beim T1 James Cook gelöst.

die Original Auspuffanlage beim Cook mit Sprinter 903 endet auf jeden Fall vor der Hinterachse.

also meine Auspuffanlage James Cook 903 Baujahr 2000 endet deutlich hinter der Hinterachse, kanpp hinter der hinteren Blattfederaufnahme.

Moin,
hab' vor ein paar Wochen meinen Auspuff komplett erneuert. Weil es das lange Endrohr von Mercedes nicht mehr gibt und weil bei den letzten T1N der Auspuff auch hinter dem Schalldämpfer mit einem Bogen nach unten endet hab' ich das auch so versucht. Mit dem Ergebnis dass ich immer wieder Abgase im Auto hatte. Ein langes Endrohr bis vor die hintere Stoßstange aus dem Zubehör hat Abhilfe geschaffen.

which shows the exhaust variants for the 5-cylinder engines. The catalog only shows this for 904 Sprinter (4 tons), but there is no difference to 903 regarding the exhaust systems.

This means that your exhaust is technically correct and looks exactly like mine. One point is of course if you smell engine exhaust in the cabin, Thomas T's advice for a long aftermarket pipe may be helpful.
But, just an idea, it could also be the exhaust gas from the heater. I've experienced this - a broken paper gasket in the heater combustion chamber leading to extreme exhaust smell in the cabin.

Mit kürzere abgasanlage wird der Kofferraum schmutzig. Genau Heute habe ich eine 2mt endrohr von Imasaf mit 1xgummihalter bestellt. Ich glaube muss man einen Teil schneiden und der endrohr einfach montieren... Ich dokumentiere mit Foto wenn es Interesse gibt.

Hier sieht man ganz gut wo meins endet.
Neu, aber gleiche Ausführung wie Original verbaut war.

Habe den ESD auch aus dem Zubehör mit der Original Teilenummer gesucht und gefunden. Es gibt wohl viele verschiedene Ausführungen
