Hello All,
I hope this finds you well and that you don't mind me writing in English instead of putting my poor German skills on display to the world!
As some of you remember, I am in the process of registering my USA-bought "NAFTA Cook" here in Berlin. Unfortunately, it has become more complicated than I expected. Changing the headlights and tail lights, and adding the fog lamp was no problem. But to get licence plates I have to do a Tüv/DEKRA inspection, and they won't look at the vehicle without the proper Abgasdaten.
Now this is where it gets tricky! Even though the US and European engines have the same 163 PS rating, they are different engine codes: OM647 in USA, and OM612 in the rest of the world. What I'm hoping you can confirm for me is the following:
- A 2004 Mercedes Sprinter 316CDI with Automatik met the "Euro 3" emissions standard
- The pollution control system includes an oxidation catalyst and exhaust gas recirculation / Abgasrückführung (EGR/AGR)
(In the NAFTA engine code OM647, there is all of this equipment, plus an oxygen sensor for more precise EGR control.)
If this is the case, could you relay to me the data in fields 2.2, V.9, 14, U.1, U.2, and U.3 from the Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil I? Perhaps with this information I can persuade Tüv/DEKRA to test the van.
Many thanks in advance, and greetings from Berlin,
Ted

Re: 2004 Abgasdaten
Hi Ted,
I hope that my reply finds you also well. My English isn't the best... I'm sorry that we didn't met at Westfalia. It is great to see how much you like your James Cook that you bring your car from the US to Berlin. That is crazy (enough) and now you get intouch with German Gründlichkeit
Regarding your request: By myself I'm driving a new JC, sorry for that. I think what you need is "die Allgemeine Betriebserlaubnis" for your car. This certificate (I hope this for you) you can get from Mercedes in Berlin. They can transcode your document if or maybe your JC was original built in Germany. Otherwise it will be a littlebit more complicated. But with the code and engine type they should help you hopefully. Please get in touch with them. Ingo.Kaspar@daimler.com. You can write him in English. I already called to Mercedes in Berlin. They bag me to write to this man a short explainig email, what I will do for you at next. Her secretary will also inform him tomorrow morning. She told me, that it will be not easy but a nice challenge for Mercedes.
Please provide them with all your technical documents of your car. Or visit them... I made the first contact here: Mercedes Benz Niederlassung Nutzfahrzeuge, Im Neudecker Weg 6, Berlin http://www.berlin.mercedes-benz.de/cont ... erlin.html
If they can't help you, we have to find another way. But I hope they could and will help you, because to bring your James Cook back to Germany is crazy enough
With best regards and good luck for you men
Oliver

Re: 2004 Abgasdaten
Hi Oliver,
Many thanks for the reply. I have written Mercedes and will keep everyone posted on what happens. It is a great vehicle and there's no way I would have left it back in America! I know we'll find a way.
Best regards,
Ted
