Urgent help needed with Towbar trailer socket
Urgent help needed with Towbar trailer socket
Greetings from the U.K. Just set off on trip with bicycle carrier fixed to Towbar and discover that the electrics to the lighting on the carrier is not working. I’ve tried a different carrier and still no lighting. So the problem is with the Cook.Factory fitted Towbar so have changed 15 amp fuse at position 6 in the under seat fuse box but still no electrics to Towbar. Can anyone urgently suggest what else I might try to restore power as a long trip. Clearly something as blown. Thanks
Re: Urgent help needed with Towbar trailer socket
Hallo Adrian,
wenn da überhaupt keine Lampe brennt, könnte es noch ein Masseproblem sein.
Ich weiss aber auch nicht wo Du da an der Steckdose ein Massekabel anschliessen kannst - sorry.

Re: Urgent help needed with Towbar trailer socket
Thank you fir the swift responses. The ground/ mass was fine when I last used it so it may be that but seems unlikely. I wondered if there is a bypass relay/ control unit and if so whether that has a seperate fuse to the 15a under the drivers seat? I suspect that I will have to get the multimeter out of the tool bag and see what power ( if any) is coming to the trailer socket using the helpful diagram you have posted.
If anyone else has ideas , especially if there are other fuses , then please post. Adrian

Re: Urgent help needed with Towbar trailer socket
Thinking it over with a beer, I wonder whether I’m to blame not the Cook. Recently I converted an old trailer from a 7pin plug to a 13 pin( using just 7 of the pins). When I connected it up to the Cook I thought I must have wired it wrongly. Thus the lh indicator on the trailer flashes when I operated the stalk for the rh etc and the number plate lights on the trailer were permanently on even though not switched on in the cab. So I disconnected the trailer and have left it fir the moment. Today I connected up the bicycle carrier on the Towbar and no lights at all from the Towbar socket. So I am wondering if by plugging in the trailer with incorrect wiring I have blown a fuse somewhere? Everything else works fine on the Cook except the Towbar socket.
Re: Urgent help needed with Towbar trailer socket
Still travelling so no time to squat at Towbar socket with a multimeter! Googling I see some ref to a 25 a fuse for the Towbar socket ( swotting the 10 a fuse under the seat listed as fuse for Towbar socket. Does that sound correct? If so where is the 25a fuse located? Thanks
Re: Urgent help needed with Towbar trailer socket
Problem now solved. During one of our campsite stops I was able to test the socket with a multimeter. Each pin had power as it should. So I then looked v carefully at the socket pins and I wondered if they were too far back in the socket housing. So I dismantled and reassembled the entire socket. It then worked. So if anyone else encounters this issue please check that pins haven’t been pushed backwards in the socket housing so that a good electrical connection is not made when the plug is inserted ( ie there is a gap between the plug pins and the socket pins). Thanks
