Hello I have my first problem with my '96 james cook. My battery chargeur 220v/12v have burnt this evening.... A lot of smoke on the camper van and luckily the circuit breaker make his job...
The question by what battery chargeur i can change the westfalia unit? In addition of the battery cables there is other things plugged in. The battery cables are i think "conv+" and "conv-". The "+led" is for symbol on the central unit and the "thermal s" for the sonde upper the battery. What are the "+S" and "-S"
This is some pictures.
Thanks Stef

Hi Stef
I had exactly the same issue with my 96 JC last year. This is apparently a common problem with the Philips chargers in JC and t4 vans.
The issue is the condensers so it can be fixed cheaply if you are handy. You can find more info in the different threads in this forum.
But I chose to mount a more modern charger from Fraron.de.
Really happy with that!
It is almost plug and play, only the mounting holes are not the same. Electric cabling is plug & play.
Good luck with your repair / replacement!
Sylvester

Hi Stéphane,

in your charger only a capacitor is defect and burnt.
If you have the possibility to solder a new one you can repair it very cheap - more information you'll find here:

Written in german - but the pictures speak for themselves.

Good luck, Carsten

salut

Did you installed the charger allready?
I suffered the same issue this summer during our 5 weeks parental leave road trip to France.
My old original charger looked the same like yours. It started to burn and crackled with a lot of smoke, while I used shore-to-ship power. Some black liquid came out and dripped onto the holder of the charger as well. Smelt afterwards pretty awful for days.
Nevertheless, I also bought a new Fraron charger too, same like you and by now it works well.

Some advice:
When you install the charger do it "upside down". Then you have the possibility to see and reach the jumpers for the settings as well as the control lights on the side. Benefit: When the cover is installed you can see the lights through a little hole.
And I suggest to use other screws than delivered. They are that thin, I can't imagine that they will last for long.
Pictures enclosed from my new one.

Greetings,
Mirko
