How to fill gas tank

Beitrag von eppyranch » 11.01.2020 22:52

Just received my 2008 James Cook and I have no idea how to fill tank. The vehicle did not come with owner book in English. Here in the states we only have propane will this work?
Please help
Thank you
Mark

Hi Mark,
take away the gray anti-slide cover, open 3 screws and take away the shelf. Than you can open the white plastic container. In the original German version it looks like this.

What do you find?

This 2.75 kg Butane Canister is indeed not available in the States. We tried very hard in 2014 with no luck. We also didn't find a similar size propane canister. The only good thing is, that the stove runs on propane with no problems even at high elevations. We camped in Colorado at 9,000 feet.

We eventually found a solution with two adapters and the much smaller 0.453 kg Coleman canisters. I will explain that in another thread.

Hi Mark,
no way.
By physical law, Propanes gas pressure is much higher than Butanes. Look this. "Prüfdruck der Flüssiggasflasche" means test pressure propane tank. Test pressure of butane tank is 12bar.
Using the butane tank with Propane may be dangerous, especially in high temperature. Not even on filling up, but all the time until the tank is 100% empty. The tank may explode.

So have a look for a suitable, available gastank.

In my former VW T4 California I had a red 3 kg propane-bottle instead of this unlucky and expensive blue campingaz bottle.
It was an owned and not a deposit bottle so when empty I went to my propane dealer to fill it up for very small money.
As I know there are country specific adapters available to use those bottles in other filling systems or to fill them up by yourself from bottle to bottle (but - this needs a little bit knowhow...).
Another option is to install a fixed gas tank which is allowed to be filled with LPG at gasstations - many campers in Germany use bottles fixed with screws and a separate filler pipe to outside of the car to be flexible and reduce costs.

Regards, Carsten
