How to obtain a Visa for Schengen area?

We hope to ship our American Westy to Europe in the not too distant future. Have information on shipping, etc. but can't figure out how to obtain a visa that will allow us to stay in the Schengen area of the EU for more then 90 days within a 6 month period. Can anyone help? Thank you.
