Rust on JC 2001-2006
Rust on JC 2001-2006
Good evening, I wanted to know if the JC phase 2 was as subject to corrosion as the phase 1. My 96 was redone a few years ago and I am considering a change for a phase 2 with 163 hp. Thanks
Re: Rust on JC 2001-2006
Hallo,
How people use/treat their JC has a major impact on aging and rust. We are owners of a JC 08/2005 316 CDI which has never seen salt on the street and which received a 'rust check' and late underbody conservation in 2019 (not the official Mercedes dealer). Very little, minor rust removal to prepare that underbody conservation. The JC always had a place in a "garage for campers". That helped to keep the JC in a good shape.
I am not saying that my JC is a 100% rust free and I will have to monitor areas without conservation: e.g. above the front fenders, inner side (!) of fender, where the blinker sits below the mirror. Hard to reach, we will see. Also to watch: the longitudinal beams, which do not exist as replacement parts anymore.
Current status: all minor issues, all good. Our car is always serviced at the Mercedes dealer - I know some guys by surname due to the long relationship and they regard our JC as "rust free", well maintained.
To answer your question: I am not aware of rust as a 'general problem' of that JC generation.
Try to buy one in good shape and question how it was maintained.
Regards, Wolf

Re: Rust on JC 2001-2006
Ok thanks. And about driving comfort? Is the engine really quieter and more pleasant to drive than the old 312?
Re: Rust on JC 2001-2006
Hallo! I never drove a 312, but the 316 CDI is a good engine to move the JC. It is never about speed or racing. As a sailor however I would say that "SOG = speed over ground" matters to me. The 316 CDI lets you eat them miles / kilometers.
