James Cook in the UK.

Beitrag von ninja.turtle007 » 04.02.2016 14:17

Hi,

I'm Tom and I'm new to the world of Mercedes James Cook. I currently have a VW T3 Syncro Westfalia but I'm very interested in getting something a little larger due to my two children getting bigger.

As I can't find any for sale in the UK I was wondering if there are any owners on here that would let me have a look around theirs and allow me to pick their brains. I want to make sure it's the the vehicle for us before heading to Germany to purchase one.

I'm and based in SW London/ Surrey. The nearer the better but I'm happy to travel a couple of hours.

I'm ideally looking for 2002 or newer due to being just outside the London Low Emission Zone.

Thanks in advance.

Tom

Hi Tom,
James Cooks are pretty hard to get hold of in the UK.
Here is one in Cornwall if it's still available:
http://carssoldquick.com/carsforsale/de ... e_cornwall
You could try this company - http://www.campervans4u.com/
They will find and import a JC for you.
We got ours from a similar company neat Sheffield back in 2007 but they don't exist any more.
Good choice - good luck!
Michael

Hi Jason, yes, that's me. I'd love to have a look around yours when it's convenient for you.

The main questions I have so far are:

1) Are they much bigger inside than a T3 westy? The layout looks really good with being able to cook whilst the kids are sat around the table.

2) What is the payload?

3) Do they require a lot of maintenance like a T3? Are they prone to rust?

4) Are things like night heater, hot water etc normal factory fitted items?

Hi Michael,

Thank you for the info.

I found this one for sale a few days ago. I want to do a bit more research before jumping on board. I noticed some come with a difflock. I'm sure this is one thing that I will really want to have.

No difflock that I am aware of
No rust issues - mine is a 2004
Huge compared to the T3
Loads of storage
great diesel heater
great gas water heater
Yes, the kitchen is fab - I was looking to change to a La Strada Nove M until I saw the kitchen!

I will send you the specs later when I locate them.

Hi Tom, I'm based in Suffolk and have a 2004 also.....I have had it a year

I found it in Germany myself and then had campervans4u import it for me.

Do contact me, because i think i could help you with a quite a few aspects.

The one you saw in Cornwall sounds quite expensive for that era, and its the wrong year for me. The 'golden age'

is 2004-2005 for several reasons that i can talk to you about.....

I did laugh when you asked if they were bigger than a T3. Its how i was when i began the journey...Below is the perfect picture for you,

with the James cook on the left. It looks massive, but in reality, its is one of the smallest vehicles with a shower and toilet, and i need them.

I'm travelling for weeks/months at a time.

If it was just for weekends, then yes a VW sized van would have been perfect, because i would then

use it as my everyday vehicle, but for any length of time, the James Cook is simply amazing.

I actually hired the VW to see.........much too small for my travel needs.

Any questions, just let me know. All the best.

Thank you for everyone's input. We have decided to wait until next year. We have a 6 week trip to Morocco planned for next winter. My westy Syncro will work better for us for this trip. Although the extra room and built in shower would've been nice.

Thanks again.

Hi Tom - bit late to this thread but if you're near Swanage in Dorset ever you'd be welcome to look over ours, a 2004 auto with diff lock. Had it since 2008 and can't praise it highly enough. Comfortable, efficient, practical bought it from Andy at capmervans4you who was very helpful and an all round stand up guy. Give us a heads up if you're heading our way:) Mob:07785 228382
